Bauland is a person illustration and animation project. I originally started working on the idea as away of developing my own style of illustration and image creation. I decided to create the illustrations in 3D by creating simple but exaggerated shaped using simple methods such as spline sweeps to avoid getting bogged down in the technical issues that come from modelling and rigging.
The major influence for these images has come form the Bauhaus school and movement and this project began with me re-creating some iconic 2D Bauhaus posters into 3D. I subsequently decided to take those principles and create a character, using only the primary colours, red, blue, yellow and black and white tones, I’ve found these restrictions have forced me to find more creative ways to express emotions and simple narrative.
What started out as an exploration into style and texture has fast become a more substantial project of world building for the main character Baumann. I’ve decided have baumann as the only character in this world who only interacts with himself in an exploration of id and ego. I’ve decided not to give Baumann any facial features, again this is another restriction that will force me to find ways to express emotions and humour by using body shape, composition and editing. This will hopefully allow the audience to project their own emotions on to the character and allow them to interact with the images.
Some of the later images are more playful, leaning more into a commercial space but still using the same principle.
